I literally love to see it.

The idea that somebody could be in an absolute mess, financially and likely emotionally - the stress that debt puts on a person - and through hard work and proper thinking, they can get themselves right again. Sign me up!!

There's something very satisfying about unpicking a knot like this. And it is pickable. Debt payoff is a logic game really, although it doesn't feel like that when you're in it.

When you're in it, it can feel physically painful, unsolvable, unending but as long as this is manageable debt - and that bit's crucial. No matter how big the debt is, as long as you can pay the minimums with even just a little leftover, then it's absolutely sortable - neat and satisfying.

The skills that you will pick up whilst paying the debt off will carry you forward into whatever comes next financially too.

Looking Money In The Eye

You're going to have to get down and dirty for this. You need to be logging onto accounts you've been avoiding, opening letters that have been piling up, understanding terms which make you feel dizzy.

There's no way to get to the end, without starting at the beginning - and that's getting it all down in front of you.

Imagine that skill applied to:

• Your pension.

• Choosing between different index funds.

Make a Decision and Stick To It

You decide the method - snowball, avalanche or a blend - choose the debt you're going to tackle and you simply, tackle it.

You're not faffing about paying bits off here and there (apart from the minimums of course), you're not paying one debt down by so much and then moving onto the next.

You are making your choice and then you are doing it.

Imagine that skill applied to:

• Investing in the stock market.

• Finally sorting out your will.
  
  

Creating Slack in Your Budget

The methods only work if you can pay off the minimums and have some leftover. Each time you pay off a debt you roll everything you were aiming there into one, and aim it somewhere else.

Over time that trickle becomes a stream and when that money is no longer flowing to your debt, it can be flowing to wherever you need it to.

Imagine that skill applied to:

• Paying off your mortgage.
